The Communist Party of Kenya (Majority) stands in steadfast solidarity with the citizens of Kenya amidst the unfolding nationwide flooding catastrophe. However, beyond mere empathy lies a critical examination of the underlying socio-economic dynamics that exacerbate the crisis. This statement serves as the most accurate analysis of the current flood disaster, illuminating the class contradictions that deepen the plight of the most vulnerable segments of society.
At the core of the issue lies a stark reality: the poor and working classes bear the brunt of natural disasters such as flooding. In Kenya, where socio-economic disparities are prevalent, this truth is magnified. The floodwaters do not discriminate, but the response to the crisis certainly does. Those residing in flood-prone areas, often informal settlements inhabited by the economically marginalized, find themselves disproportionately impacted by the deluge. Their inability to afford safer housing options or relocate to less hazardous areas leaves them exposed and defenceless against the fury of nature.
The root cause of this vulnerability can be traced back to the class contradictions inherent in capitalist society. The capitalist mode of production thrives on the exploitation of labour and the perpetuation of socio-economic inequalities. In this system, the wealthy elite, who control the means of production, wield disproportionate power and influence. They dictate government policies and shape the socio-political landscape to serve their own interests, often at the expense of the working class.
Within the context of disaster response, this class divide becomes glaringly apparent. While the Kenyan political elite may express sympathy and offer token gestures of support, their actions – or lack thereof – speak volumes. CPK can now confirm that the relief efforts are inadequate, delayed, and mismanaged, leaving the most vulnerable segments of society to fend for themselves. The majority of deaths have been confirmed in poor neighbourhoods like Mathare, Kibera et al. President Ruto’s administration's failure to prioritize the needs of the poor and working classes reflects a fundamental disregard for human life in the pursuit of profit and power. The call for prayers to address the flood situation by the Kenya Kwanza administration from their luxurious homes is a mockery of the suffering of the poor majority.
Furthermore, the allocation of resources during this crisis reflects the skewed priorities of the Kenya Kwanza corrupt administration. This government is a betrayal of the poor people who voted it into power. Essential services such as healthcare and education, which are crucial for mitigating the impact of disasters and rebuilding communities, are chronically underfunded. Following the 2023-2025 budget, most of the public funds have been allocated to finance the lavish lifestyle of President Ruto’s friends and political affiliates, not to mention ghost workers who shamelessly parade themselves every month at State House to collect alms on a monthly basis. President Ruto's now unpopular government budgets are geared towards serving the interests of the capitalist elite, whether through corporate subsidies, tax breaks, or infrastructure projects that benefit the wealthy few. This corrupt government has declared war against the people, violating all the social contracts, thus having no moral authority to stay in power. President Ruto hates the poor, from the attack on workers to now manufacturing the death of the poor through negligence in handling floods.
The current flood disaster in Kenya serves as a microcosm of this broader class struggle. While the floodwaters indiscriminately inundate homes and livelihoods, the response – or lack thereof – is anything but impartial. The ruling class, mainly President Ruto and his political allies insulated by their wealth and privilege, remain detached from the suffering of the masses, offering hollow promises and inadequate solutions. President Ruto has mastered the art of telling believable lies and hiding behind prayers.
CPK affirms that amidst the despair and devastation, there lies a glimmer of hope – the resilience and solidarity of the working class. The Communist Party of Kenya calls upon all those who find themselves on the side of the oppressed to unite in collective action. It is only through solidarity and mobilization that the working class can challenge the status quo and demand meaningful change. We must continue to plan to uproot President Ruto and his cronies from power.
In practical terms, CPK will continue supporting grassroots efforts to provide aid and relief to those affected by the floods. CPK, as the only party representing the majority, shall continue organizing and advocating for policies that prioritize the needs of the poor and working classes, both in times of crisis and in everyday life. CPK will continue standing in solidarity with frontline workers, who are often the first to respond and the last to be recognized for their efforts.
Beyond immediate relief efforts, the struggle for justice and equality must continue. The Communist Party of Kenya calls for a radical restructuring of society, one that prioritizes human needs over corporate profits and places power in the hands of the working class. This requires a fundamental reimagining of our economic and political systems, one that is rooted in principles of equity, solidarity, and justice. This is only possible through the defeat of our class enemy, through puppets of western imperialist interests represented by Mr Ruto and his cronies.
As the floodwaters recede and the nation begins to rebuild, let us not forget the lessons learned from this disaster. Let us remember the inherent injustices of the capitalist system and the urgent need for systemic change. Let us stand together in solidarity, united in our determination to build a better world for all.
