SDP condemns in no uncertain terms the 12th February coup attempted against the democratically elected Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. The coup attempt that was foiled by the patriotic and progressive army of Venezuela that stood firmly with President Nicolas Maduro was coordinated by Venezuela’s right-wing opposition with the support of the U.S. Government.
This is not the first time the traitorous right wing forces have used violent means with the support of the US in futile but damaging efforts to overthrow the revolution in order to restore the capitalist and neo-colonial order in the country. In fact, just the day before the revelations of the coup attempt, opposition leaders Leopoldo Lopez, Maria Corina Machado and Antonio Ledezma released a “transition plan” which involved privatization of the country’s oil, deregulation of the economy and accords with “international financial institutions” including the International Monetary Fund.” In other words, the coup attempt aimed at overthrowing socialism and restoring neoliberalism in Venezuela.
SDP is in solidarity with President Maduro, his Government and people as they defend and consolidate their revolution, which also belongs to the poor and oppressed of Latin America and the world. The United Nations must condemn the United States Government for the blatant violations of the principles of the world institution of safeguarding peace, security and the right of all nations to sovereignty and self - determination. For this heinous crime against a member state, the UN must impose sanctions against the US or continue losing credibility. Nations of the world too that believe in peace and democracy must condemn the coup attempt and the shameful acts of the US.
We call upon all Kenyans and members of Africa Left Network Forum (ALNEF) to join us in condemning the coup attempt.
Long live President Maduro and the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela!
Long live socialism and socialist internationalism!
